ZNAPP! FAQ
Questions and answers for the website—organized by topic.
As an independent contractor, you have full control over your schedule. A typical shift might be around three hours, such as from 6–9 PM (assuming it's dark in your area during that window). If your mobile phone is securely mounted on the windshield and actively capturing images through our app, you're free to listen to music, take breaks whenever you need, and manage your time as you see fit. You set the pace and structure of your shift.
There are no set schedules or minimum time commitments—how much you drive is entirely up to your availability and lifestyle. To help us capture all necessary data efficiently, we rely on having many ZNAPP! Drivers on the road at any given time, so you can contribute as much as works for you.
Most reliable and safe vehicles are welcome, including sedans, SUVs, and pickup trucks. While we do prefer pickup trucks and SUVs due to their versatility, sedans are also perfectly acceptable.
Yes, your mobile phone is essential for capturing high-quality images and receiving payment. Please review our list of approved phone models to ensure compatibility. While not required, we recommend using a clip-on polarizing filter or a phone case with a built-in polarizing filter to improve image quality. You can view ZNAPP!'s recommended options here.
ZNAPP! provides pre-determined routes called "tokens" that are spread across the entire study area. If you're driving in a large city, tokens may be available close to home or farther away—anywhere within the coverage zone. You can choose to claim and complete tokens near you or explore routes further out, depending on your preference.
ZNAPP! requires all drivers to follow local road rules, including using your mobile phone only in a hands-free manner while driving. The ZNAPP! app is designed for intuitive token claiming and ensures that all image data collected is used solely for roadway inspection purposes. No personally identifying information (PII) is collected or linked to ZNAPP! Drivers, and the app does not record audio—so your personal conversations inside your vehicle remain private and are never recorded.
If the forecast indicates potentially disruptive weather conditions, we recommend not reserving tokens until conditions improve. Once tokens are reserved, a 12-hour completion timer begins. If the weather prevents you from completing them, this will be recorded in your profile as an incomplete token. ZNAPP! Support actively monitors token reservations and completions to track driver performance. Incomplete tokens can affect your performance history, driver standing, and Badge status. Because there's a waitlist for available drivers, it's best to reserve tokens only when you're confident you can complete them.
ZNAPP! Drivers are paid exclusively through commissions, not hourly wages. The value of each token is calculated based on several factors, including distance, posted speed limit, road class, and market type. While it's not possible to predict the exact value of every unique token, ZNAPP! Drivers typically earn the equivalent of $15 to $35 per hour, with an average around $25 per hour.
For the program year ending 2026, ZNAPP! Drivers are paid monthly for all work completed in the previous month. For example, if you drove 18 hours over 6 days in June, you can expect payment in the first two weeks of July for that work. Payments are processed monthly to ensure timely and consistent compensation for your efforts.
Yes! ZNAPP! offers bonus incentives to drivers! We frequently push multiplier bonuses for tokens that are in high demand. These bonuses multiply your earnings on specific tokens—for example, if a token typically pays $5.00, a 1.5x multiplier bonus would increase your payment to $7.50 for completing that token, without requiring you to drive any further. Multiplier bonus rates vary depending on market needs and token priority, so there are regular opportunities to earn extra.
No, as an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own fuel and other vehicle-related costs. ZNAPP! does not provide mileage or gas reimbursement for drivers.
Yes, ZNAPP! Drivers receive training on how to set up and use the ZNAPP! app. To become a ZNAPP!, you need to meet the minimum requirements, including having a valid driver's license and knowing how to drive safely. The rest of the training and onboarding details can be found in our driver resources here.

No prior experience with data collection is required. However, familiarity with navigation apps is essential for successfully completing your routes as a ZNAPP!.
You'll need to use the ZNAPP! app, which is exclusively available to registered ZNAPP! Drivers. The app can be installed on your phone from the Apple App Store or Google Play, depending on your device. All route claiming, data collection, and instructions are managed directly through the app for convenience and ease of use.
While completing tokens, the images captured are stored temporarily on your mobile phone. After your shift, you have the option to upload the data using either WiFi or cellular, depending on your preference. The app uses minimal data during drives for turn-by-turn navigation—comparable to other leading mapping apps—so there's little impact on your cellular data plan unless you choose to upload the images using cellular data after your route.
If you lose connection during a route, the built-in navigation will keep operating without active GPS, providing approximate location and routing until your connection is restored. This ensures you can continue driving and completing your token even in areas with spotty service.
The vetting process generally takes 1 to 2 weeks. After your initial interview, you'll be invited to complete a contractor application, where you'll confirm details about your vehicle, mobile phone, and work eligibility. Final selection is made once all ZNAPP! requirements are successfully met, and you'll be notified about next steps promptly.
Once the vetting process is complete, we'll notify you by phone and/or email to let you know if you've been selected to drive for ZNAPP!. You'll receive clear instructions on your next steps following your selection.
Yes, ZNAPP! conducts background checks on all drivers before they can start. If references are needed beyond the background check, we'll request them from you as part of the onboarding process.
Yes! As an independent contractor, you have complete freedom to decide when you work. You can set your own schedule to fit your needs and preferences. Just keep in mind that data capture needs to occur during nighttime hours.
You're free to drive during weekday or weekend nighttime hours, whichever suits your schedule. However, daytime driving isn't required, and tokens captured during daytime hours won't be eligible for payment. All data collection must occur at night for it to count towards your earnings.
ZNAPP! does not set specific work shifts, so you have complete control over when you drive. There's no need to worry about canceling or rescheduling a shift—you simply drive when it works best for your personal schedule.
